Reservoir Engineering of Shallow Fault - Charged Hydrothermal Systems

چکیده

Introduction Many of the low-to-moderate temperature ( < 15OOC) hydrothermal resources being developed in the United States occur in near-surface aquifers. These shallow thermal anomalies, typical of the Basin and Range and Cascades are attributed to hydrothermal circulation. The aquifers are often associated with faults, fractures, and highly complex geological settings; they are often very limited in size and display anomalous temperature reversals with depth. Because of the shallow depth and often very warm temperatures of these resources, they are attractive for development of direct-use hydrothermal energy projects. However, development of the resources is hindered by their complexity, the often limited manifestation of the resource, and lack of established reservoir engineering and assessment methodology.

Magma storage in a strike-slip caldera

Silicic calderas form during explosive volcanic eruptions when magma withdrawal triggers collapse along bounding faults. The nature of specific interactions between magmatism and tectonism in caldera-forming systems is, however, unclear. Regional stress patterns may control the location and geometry of magma reservoirs, which in turn may control the spatial and temporal development of faults. H...

Muon dynamic radiography of density changes induced by hydrothermal activity at the La Soufrière of Guadeloupe volcano

Imaging geological structures through cosmic muon radiography is a newly developed technique which shows a great potential in volcanology. Here we demonstrate that muon radiography permits to detect and characterize mass movements in shallow hydrothermal systems of low-energy active volcanoes like the La Soufrière lava dome. We present an experiment conducted on this volcano during the Summer 2...

Geologic Framework of Jurassic Reservoir Rocks in the Dixie Valley Geothermal Field, Nevada: Implications from Hydrothermal Alteration and Stratigraphy

The main reservoir in the Dixie Valley geothermal field of Nevada is hosted in fractured Jurassic rocks within the hanging wall of the Stillwater fault. Within the Jurassic sequence, at least four major stages of alteration related to the fault system can be identified. The paragenetic sequence from oldest to youngest consists of Stage I) biotite-potassium feldspar veins, and epidote-chlorite-c...

Stable and radiogenic isotopes as tracers for the origin, mixing and subsurface history of fluids in submarine shallow-water hydrothermal systems

The shallow-water hydrothermal system in Tutum Bay on the west side of Ambitle Island, Papua New Guinea provides us with an exceptional opportunity to study isotope systematics in a near shore setting. Compared to seawater, the hydrothermal fluids in Tutum Bay have lower values for dD, dO, dC, and Sr and higher values for H, d34S(SO4) and d 18O(SO4). The dO and dD records for vents 1 and 4 indi...

Investigation of seismic damage index due to water level changes in reservoir through nonlinear dynamic analysis under Far-Fault and Near-Fault ground motions

In this study, reservoir water level effects on nonlinear dynamic response of concrete gravity dams are investigated. For this purpose, the nonlinear behavior of the dam concrete is captured using the concrete damage plasticity (CDP) on the non associated flow rule assumption. Water in the reservoir is represented by the Lagrangian (displacement-based) fluid finite elements. The program ABAQUS ...
